What to Wear for Family Photos in Perth

May 13, 2026

Choosing outfits for family photos can feel like one of the hardest parts of the whole process.

You want everyone to look nice, but you also do not want the stress of trying to perfectly match five different outfits while keeping kids happy and comfortable.

The good news is, it does not have to be complicated.

As a Perth family photographer, I always help guide my families on what to wear so their photos feel natural, timeless and true to them. Here are my best tips to make it easier.

Start with mum first

I always recommend starting with your outfit first.

The reason is simple. Once you have chosen something you feel good in, it becomes much easier to build the rest of the family’s outfits around that.

You are often the hardest one to dress, and you deserve to wear something that feels comfortable, flattering and like you.

If you are one of my clients, you’ll also have access to my client wardrobe, which can make things much easier.

Choose soft, earthy or neutral tones

Neutral and earthy colours usually photograph beautifully because they keep the focus on your family rather than the clothing.

Think:

  • creams
  • beige
  • soft whites
  • rust
  • soft blues
  • olive
  • warm browns
  • muted pinks

These tones work really well with Perth’s beaches, fields and natural backdrops.

Avoid everyone matching exactly

Instead of putting everyone in the exact same colours, aim for outfits that coordinate.

This creates more depth and looks far more natural in photos.

For example, one person might wear a soft beige, another a muted blue, and another warm cream. It all works together without feeling too forced.

Keep comfort in mind

The best photos happen when everyone feels comfortable.

That means:

  • clothes that fit well
  • nothing too itchy or stiff
  • shoes that work for the location
  • outfits kids can move in

If children feel uncomfortable, it often shows. I’d always choose comfort and movement over anything too formal.

Think about the location

What you wear should also suit the setting.

Beach sessions, I recommend soft flowing fabrics and bare feet often work beautifully.

For field or bush locations, earthy tones and textured fabrics photograph really well.

In-home sessions, simple, comfortable pieces in soft tones are always a lovely choice.

What to avoid

A few things I’d avoid for family photos:

  • bright neon colours
  • large logos
  • busy patterns
  • too many competing colours
  • clothes that need constant adjusting

You want the focus to stay on your faces, connection and the feeling of the images.

When it comes to what to wear for family photos in Perth, the goal is not perfection. It is choosing outfits that feel comfortable, natural and connected, so your family looks like yourselves at your best.

And remember, you do not have to figure it all out on your own. I help my families with outfit guidance so the whole process feels easy from the start.

If you’re looking for a Perth family photographer and want help with everything from location to outfits, I’d love to help.
