What to Expect From Your Newborn Session

August 17, 2023

Bringing your baby home is one of the biggest and most beautiful shifts you’ll ever experience.

The days can feel long, but somehow the newborn stage still passes in a blur. The tiny fingers, sleepy cuddles, milk-drunk faces and the way your baby fits so perfectly into your arms all change so quickly.

One of the questions I get asked most is: when should I book my newborn session?

If you’re thinking about newborn photos and want them to feel natural, warm and full of connection, here’s what you need to know.

The best time to book your newborn photographer

The best time to book your newborn photographer is while you are still pregnant.

Most families book their newborn session during the second or third trimester so I can reserve space around their due date. That way, once baby arrives, one more thing is already taken care of.

You do not need to know the exact day your baby will arrive. We simply book based around your due date or planned c-section, then confirm the final timing once your baby is here. This keeps things easy and gives us a little flexibility if plans shift.

How soon after my baby is born should I book the shoot?

Newborn photos are often taken within the first few weeks, but there is no one perfect deadline.

I love photographing babies from just a few days old through to around 8 weeks, and honestly, every stage within that window is beautiful in its own way. In the very early days, we tend to capture more sleepy cuddles and those tiny newborn details. A little later on, babies are often more alert and starting to show more personality. The current live post on your site already reflects that broader newborn window, which is a real strength and worth keeping.

The most important thing is not forcing yourself into a tiny window. It is choosing a time that feels right for your family.

Why booking early makes things easier

Those early weeks with a new baby can feel full in every way. Beautiful, emotional, exhausting, love-filled, and a little blurry all at once.

Booking your session before your baby arrives means:

  • your date is already set aside
  • you do not need to research photographers while sleep-deprived
  • you have time to ask questions
  • everything feels much easier once baby is here

It is one of those things that feels so good to have organised ahead of time.

What happens after you enquire?

Once you get in touch, I’ll chat through availability and help you choose the collection that feels right for your family.

A $200 booking fee is all that’s needed to reserve your session date. From there, I’ll guide you through the next steps, including planning, what to wear, and how to prepare for your session.

My newborn sessions are available in two collections:

Signature Collection
A beautiful option if you would love a strong selection of images from your session.

Full Story Collection
Perfect if you know you’ll want the full gallery and all the little moments from this season.

If you are also thinking about maternity photos, you can book a maternity and newborn bundle as well.

How to prepare for your newborn session

The good news is, you do not need a perfect home or a perfect baby.

Your home does not need to look perfect.
Your baby does not need to snooze through the whole session.
And you do not need to have everything feeling completely under control.

I’ll guide you through how to prepare in a simple, easy way so the whole experience feels calm and manageable. We only need a few lovely pockets of light, a little space to move around, and your family exactly as you are.

What newborn photos with me are really about

My newborn sessions are not about stiff poses or trying to create something that does not feel like you.

They are about your baby, your family, and the love already surrounding this new little person.

It’s the look on your partner’s face as they hold your baby.
The tiny fingers wrapped around yours.
The way your older child naturally comes in close.
The love, warmth and newness of this season at home.

It is always connection over perfection.

If you are wondering when to book your newborn photographer in Perth, the best time is during pregnancy so I can hold space around your due date.

That way, once your baby arrives, you can simply settle in and know that these early memories are already planned for.

If you’re looking for a Perth newborn photographer and want photos that feel natural, warm and full of love, I’d love to hear from you.
